"Knowing Your Worth Is Not Arrogance", Mikel Obi Defends Osimhen On Recent Rant With Finidi

Former Nigerian national team captain in action for his former club side.

The Nigerian forward stirred up some controversy a few weeks ago with a rant on Instagram Live directed at Finidi George.

Osimhen, regrettably responded to an inaccurate post, which left him in a difficult position.

Now that he has rejoined the Super Eagles, the legendary John Mikel Obi has commented on the situation.

Super Eagles legend John Mikel Obi has stepped in to defend Victor Osimhen several months after the striker's Instagram Live outburst was directed at former coach Finidi George.

Osimhen made his return to the Super Eagles for the first time since the AFCON 2023 final during the 3-0 victory over Benin Republic, scoring the second goal just six minutes after coming on.

The striker had missed the international break in June, which led to a misleading blog post where the forward's commitment was questioned by the head coach, causing him to react angrily.

The Napoli star, now on loan with Galatasaray, has not addressed the issue publicly, but it came back into the spotlight when he rejoined the team for the AFCON 2025 qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda.

This is how Mikel Obi seemed to have defended Osimhen;

Former national team captain Mikel Obi discussed the incident on the 'Obi One Podcast' after it resurfaced during the international break.

“Every time I speak to him, he’s very humble and respects people. As I said, respect is reciprocal. I respect you, you respect me,” Obi said.

“I think this situation with the Nigerian coach, where he blew out, he just felt it wasn’t fair because the manager didn’t protect him. He said he had a conversation with the manager, everything was recorded, and the manager just threw him under the bus.”

“He was really pissed off, so he came out to defend himself. Maybe the way he did it wasn’t the best, but he had the right to speak out. I have nothing against Victor for that, and knowing your worth isn’t arrogance,” Mikel Obi added to his statement.

Former Super Eagles player Emeka Ezeugo reignited the issue by demanding that the Super Eagle's forward be suspended unless he offers a public apology.

The head coach however, is against suspending the player from the national team. He acknowledged that it was a mistake and believes it is best for everyone to move on from the situation.
