As a result of the salary structure adjustments made by the federal government committee tasked with reviewing the new minimum wage, retirees will now see an increase of N32,000 in their monthly pensions.
This information was disclosed in a memo from the National Salaries, Wages, and Income Commission (NSIWC), which was reviewed by The Punch on Monday, September 30.
The memo, dated September 27, 2024, and signed by NSIWC chairman Ekpo Nta, states that the retirees affected by this increase are those who retired under the salary structures for doctors, health workers, lecturers, police, paramilitary, armed forces, and other related sectors.

Notably, agencies not covered by the specified salary structures have been encouraged to seek pension adjustments in line with the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) and the NSIWC Act.
Here is what the part of the memo stated:
The approval takes effect from July 29, 2024. Agencies that are not part of any of the above-mentioned salary structures should apply to the commission to determine the appropriate increase that will be applicable to their retirees.

Remember that Ekpo Nta, chairman of the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission, confirmed that the government has authorized an increase in the consolidated public service salary structure (CONPSS) in accordance with the Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act, 2024.
This came after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved a new minimum wage of N70,000 on July 18, 2024, which the Senate subsequently passed into law.
This decision was met with enthusiasm by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).
The adjustment in the minimum wage aims to enhance workers' living standards in the face of rising inflation and economic difficulties.
However, while this wage increase is a positive step for employees, businesses will need to brace for its potential impacts on operations, staffing strategies, and overall financial stability.
